HandymanWire – Wiring a 3-way or 4-way switch

I do understand how to do a 3 way switch with one light, but want to be sure that I understand how to do it with just one more light. If you can help me, that would be greatly appreciated. For this reason it is so much easier to wire the circuit by taking power to the first switch, switch to switch, and then up to the light, and light to light. Will I need a separate power wire to energize that second switch??? Maurice The solution given is the best. In your method, someone seeing the wiring has no idea that it is a 3 way installation. Hi this is Steve Mccurdy from Leviton Manufacturing. I am here to show you how to install dimmers. Now in this segment we’re going to install a three-way dimmer in a bathroom application that has two entrances. Now remember as with any electrical work you want to make sure that you de-engize the circuit that’s feeding the area that you work in. The first thing we want to do is remove the wall plate.

Now first you want to make sure that you check to see if there’s no power available in this area and that’s what I’m going to do right now.

You can turn the lights on here and off over there, and you can do it yourself once you know the trick. It’s not exactly simple, but it’s far less complicated than most people assume. There are two important things to remember to make 3-way switches work right. One is that the switches are really single-pole, double-throw devices. That means that one of the three terminals on each switch is always connected to one of the other two.

The terminal that is always connected is called the point terminal. It should be specially identified. Most commonly, the screw for the point terminal will be dark and the other two screws will be bright. Toggling – flipping – a 3-way switch changes which of the other two terminals the point terminal is connected to.

To help visualize this, you can think of a 3-way switch as a “V. Each time the switch is flipped, the wire terminated on the point is disconnected from one of the other two terminal screws and connected to the other. The other important thing to remember is that 3-way switches come in pairs. It takes two of them, and only two, to make the system work.

I picked this question as I myself have connected one wrong. As soon as I applied power to the circuit, I let the smoke out of the new unit rendering it useless. The color scheme for the wires on most of these units do not make sense in the real world of color coding for electrical devices. Hi Terry, I just have a simple question that I have researched and not found a clear concrete answer to.

I got a new 3 way touch sensor switch for my touch lamp. The old sensor has the black, red, white and yellow wires. The new one has the yellow, blk, but brown and grey wires. I have gotten conflicting answers as to which the grey and brown go to. One talks as if the red and grey are the same then another sounds that the red and brown are the same. I hope you can help me as I do not want to connect incorrectly to either hurt the new sensor or the lamp itself.

Two terminals will be on one side of the switch housing; one terminal on the other side.

Four-way switches have four terminals. This switch works in combination with two three-way switches to control electricity to lights and receptacles from three locations. All of the four terminals are brass colored. They support hot conductors traveller wires , which receive and transfer electricity from each of the three-way switches. Canadian code requires the use of 14 wire for interior application. Local and provincial codes should be checked before starting any wiring project.

On the switch on the right, you have a neutral, but you don’t have constant hot — hot is switched, on either the red or black, depending on how the first switch is flipped. Another common way the switches are wired is the power goes to the fixture first. In this case, there is no neutral at the switches. Also note, the black tape on the white wires indicates this. White is, by code, always neutral, and has to be marked if it’s used for a switched circuit.
